Description

Evaluation comprising the machine excavation of three trenches 1.5m wide and 45m long in total. The southern part of the site had been greatly reduced before work commenced; here all soils had been removed and natural deposits cut into. Other parts of the site had also been disturbed, but to a lesser degree; here material interpreted as probably resulting from recent demolitions was seen, though a number of partly-exposed possible wall foundations and stone/brick culverts were seen. Trench 3, in the southern part of the site, was devoid of archaeology. Trenches 1 and 2 contained archaeological deposits. Most were considered to be of 18/19th century origin, with some deposits relating to the recently-demolished buildings on the site. The earliest feature recorded was interpreted as a former medieval boundary ditch, possibly part of a burgage plot. A small assemblage of post-medieval domestic pottery sherds was recovered from the site.
