Description
Archaeological evaluation comprising two evaluation trenches running roughly east-west across the site, and measuring 31.2m by 0.9m (Trench 1) and 32.1m by 0.9m (Trench 2) and stopping at the natural chalk or the limit of the mini-digger, whichever was higher. Three large ditches were exposed; the Roman defences. Sondages were dug into the filling of the ditches in places. The eastern end of Trench 1 was extended by hand to expose more of a buried land surface, which in turn proved to seal a prehistoric, possibly Neolithic, ditch.
