Description
A geophysical survey was carried out as part of a Masters by Research project to investigate further the evidence and extent of a salt production site in the vicinity. A Bartington 601-2 dual sensor Fluxgate Gradiometer with 1m spacing and recording 8 readings per metre, was used across two sections of the field divided into 20m by 20m grids. The results confirmed those of previous pieces of work such as a modern pipeline, a 2014 footpath and metal fence and a metal water trough. Salt production evidence was found in the area near the above mentioned pipe trench in the form of 6 sub-circular anomalies implying high levels of burning. Other possible features of archaeological interest were revealed in the form, mainly of linear anomalies. These may have been related to Romano-British salt production and the presence of a Roman road with its ditches or suggestive of a settlement of the same date.
