Description
An archaeological evaluation was commissioned by the WYG Group in relation to a planning application for the demolition of a garage and construction of sheltered apartments. Two trenches were excavated with measurements varying from 14.30m to 14.50m in length and from 1.10m to 1.20m in depth. Both were 4m wide.
Trench 1 was positioned to the south west of the site, nearest to the road. In the north-west end of the trench at a depth of 0.26m underneath modern features and made ground was a ditch running SW to NE; the filling of this ditch contained 4 sherds of pottery dating from the mid-13th to the 16th century. Another ditch running parallel was filled with similar deposits and some animal bone, and was thought to be of similar date. This in turn cut an undated pit containing charcoal and animal bones .
Trench 2 positioned to the central north east of the site, contained similar stratigraphy to Trench 1 and no archaeological deposits were found. Trench 3 was aligned south-west to north-east revealed made ground similar to that seen in the other trenches, and no archaeological deposits were found.
