Description

A gradiometry survey was commissioned by Hallam Land in relation to use of the site for residential development. The survey area comprised approximately 37 ha of undulating grassland and arable farmland. 6 ha could not be surveyed due to crops and overgrown vegetation. The magnetic survey was carried out using a dual sensor Bartington Grad601-2 taking readings at 0.25m along traverses 1m apart. Several anomalies were identified that were interpreted as possible or probable archaeological features. Those defined as probable included a number of linear features and a triangular enclosure. There were more indications of medieval or post-medieval agriculture most likely representing a field system with various boundaries identified not concurrent with modern ones. There were also indications of ridge and furrow cultivation.
