Description

Top-soil and stoneless clay layer removed by back-acting excavator until features observed. Features then investigated by hand until origin established. SAS 272: A roughly circular feature was identified as a hearth, due to evidence of in-situ buring, but was undatable. Another pit was found to contain the articulated skeleton of a horse with post-mediaeval horseshoes and a deposit of decomposing straw/ manure. This was interpreted as a relatively revent deposit. SAS 293: A number of straight linear features were observed which were intrepreted as modern plough scars. Other linear features were interpreted as post-Mediaeval field boundaries and some circular features as animal burrows and plant disturbance. At the end of the investigation of this section, part of a ring ditch and several Bronze Age cremation urns were uncovered and investigated in detail.
