Description

A survey was undertaken on behalf of the Dorset AONB as part of the South Dorset Ridgeway Partnership Project of Black Down a block of land owned and managed by Dorset County Council. Heathland restoration was to be carried out and the survey was part of the planning for that process. The survey consisted of a desk top assessment and level 1 survey of the area. A further level 3 survey was undertaken of three sites which were a late Bronze Age cross ridge dyke, a prehistoric field system and a Bronze Age Barrow overlain by medieval boundary banks. A Gazeteer of archaelogical and historic sites was complied demonstrating the longevity of the area for human activity from prehistoric to modern times.
