Description
Magnetometer survey commissioned by Wessex Water of an area close to the reservoir and taking in a group of barrows on Long Barrow Hill. The survey was conducted with Bartington Grad 601-2, twin sensor array, vertical component fluxgate magnetic gradiometers, following a system of 30m grids within each of the fields. Of 7.8 ha available, 5.8 ha was suitable for survey in June and July 2012. Work was completed in March 2013 when Field 3 (1ha) became available. The survey revealed magnetic anomalies arising from the barrows and associated ditches. Other anomalies of probable archaeological origin to the west of Long Barrow Farm were interpreted as possible small pits.
