Description

An archaeological evaluation consisting of an earthwork survey and excavation of two trenches was carried out in relation to a planning application for a new farmhouse and garage. The site may have contained archaeological features such as earthworks which related to the deserted medieval settlement at Hilton. The earthworks survey found no surface evidence of earthworks. Two trenches measuring 15m by 1.8m each were excavated by machine to the depth of the natural geology (600mm and 700mm respectively). No archaeological deposits were found. A small assemblage of finds was recovered including a small group of medieval domestic pottery, abraded by ploughing, mostly from Trench 1. No features to indicate the remains of the medieval settlement were observed in the trenches.
