Description

The watching brief was carried out during the groundworks for the construction of two houses to the rear of The Grasshopper. The maximum depth of the excavated trench was 2m. A sequence of fills affected by the fluvial processes of the Allen was noted. An assemblage of pottery, modern glass and butchered animal bones was recovered. The pottery was generally domestic and mostly of 17th to 18th century Verwood earthenware storage vessels. Modern deposits and brick structures revealed were Victorian and outbuildings to the rear of the public house.
