Description

The evaluation was undertaken prior to development of the site on behalf of SIMPLY Land and New Homes LLP. There was some possibility of Roman remains given the proximity of the site to other such features. Two trenches were machine excavated, 1 measuring 2.15m width by 4.15m length by 900mm max depth and 2 measuring 2.30m by 4.20m by 900mm depth. One feature was found in trench 1, a semicircular cut or disturbance which may have been root disturbance from a tree or the edge of a shallow pit. One sherd of post medieval pottery and one iron nail were found. Trench 2 contained a possible ditch aligned SW-NE although the northernmost sides were outside the trench area. Post-medieval pottery ( 17th to 18th century) and clay pipe were found in the fill and no further sampling was done. No evidence or medieval or earlier activity such as Roman was found.
