Description

The evaluation took place on behalf of Wessex Water prior to redevelopment of the site for dwellings. Three trenches were mechanically excavated, at the north, east and south parts of the site. The density of features across the site was low although there was a significant amount of late Saxon oxidised UGSD pottery in Trench 1. Structural remains of buildings were not found although roofing slate was present particularly in medieval contexts. Trench 1 contained medieval features such as a ditch and pit. Pottery was found dating between late Saxon and later medieval indicating a long lived site of settlement at the north of the site. Trench 2 contained a post medieval pit dated by infilling of tiny pottery sherds, pipe and glass. Trench 3 contained few significant features. A further watching brief was recommended as work progressed.
