Description
Excavation by hand of a pipe trench (Trench 1) approximately 0.3m wide by 0.5m deep and running 4.7m north-east from the existing oil tank beside the house. This was expanded at its south-western end closest to the house (approx 0.6m x 0.8m by 0.2m deep). This trench passed across the line of the Roman road in the area of secondary scrub along the north-eastern farm boundary.
At the north-eastern end of the pipe trench the expansion of Trench 1 was undertaken in the cleared scrub area on the line of the Roman Road, but only the top 0.2 m of the existing topsoil was removed. No additional features were encountered during the final stages of the excavation and the recovery of modern finds mixed with 18th and 19th century material from the excavated topsoils confirmed the recednt nature of these deposits.
