Description

An archaeological trench evaluation was carried out prior to the extension of gravel extraction by SITA UK as part of planning requirements. The aim was to confirm whether several low mounds were round barrows, and if so, their nature and degree of survival. Three trenches were machine dug, one 50m long by 1.2m wide positioned across the centre of the largest mound and two others 5m long by 1.2m wide across the top and base respectively of a second possible mound. All trenches were at least 1m deep. Analysis of the soil content and absence of buried soil, turf lines or ditches indicated that the mounds were natural landforms.
