Description

An archaeological evaluation in advance of submission of a planning application for a new house. This comprised the digging of two trenches, one 10 metres long and the other 5 metres long, and both 1.6 metres wide. Topsoil/overburden were removed by machine to a depth between 1.2 m and 1.5 m deep. Machine digging ceased at 1.2 m and a sondage was dug to 1.5m. Topsoil was a very dark greyish brown clay with frequent sand and gravel fragments. Subsoil was a dark greyish brown silty clay with gravel with frequent angular to rounded greensand fragments. Below this was a brown silty clay with mortar lenses and frequent angular to rounded greensand fragments. No archaeological features or deposits were observed. Natural was not found. It was noted that no human bone fragments were to be seen in the deposits removed. Modern finds were observed in the subsoil.
