Description

Observations and recording during groundwork associated with a geotechnical investigation comprising 11 test pits, prior to submission of a planning application. The park pale associated with the nearby medieval hunting lodge was thought to cross the site; no evidence of it was observed in the pits, though they may not have coincided with it. A filled-in pond was seen towards the centre of the site. The ground surface across the whole site was observed to be very uneven, due to modern dumping. Two sandstone walls were recorded in the centre/east of the site but could not be dated. No other features or deposits of archaeological interest were observed, and no finds of earlier than modern date.
