Description
The remains of two Romano-British kilns or hearths were excavated in September and October 1949, under the supervision of H P Smith. Fragments of red and black Roman coarsewares had been found in a bomb crater near the shore of Holes Bay and an area just to the south was excavated. The kilns were found at a depth of about 2 feet and charcoal, briquetage and pottery was found adjacent, suggesting they were used for saltmaking. The pottery included countersunk-handled black burnished ware vessels, white ware flagons, etc, of probable 1st century date. (1)
