Description

Observations and recording during digging of footings for an extension to the cottage. This comprised a trench 0.7m wide and 0.75-1.0m wide on the eastern side of the house, for an extension measuring 2.92m by 6.36m. The natural geology was a mixture of pale grey and orange coarse sand and flint gravel. A brick structure was partly exposed at the southern end of the trench. The structure had been opened and filled with concrete in the recent past, and appears to have been a square or rectangular shaft several metres deep with rendered sides and a corbelled top. The function of this feature was not clear, but it is thought likely to be nineteenth century in date.
