Description

Monitoring of ground reduction and foundation trench excavation in January 2010, and excavation of a swimming pool in March 2010. Topsoil was roughly 450mm deep across the whole of the development area and contained common slate with occasional fragments of brick and tile, rare later post-medieval pottery and glass, and rare fragments of clay pipe stem. Medieval material was completely absent. Ground reduction was carried out by a mechanical excavator using a ditching bucket. Subsoil was not exposed. Two linear features were recorded. A ditch on a NNW-SSE alignment was present in the eastern end of the southern foundation for the new dwelling, and a ditch was also observed in the northern foundation trench for the new dwelling and across the swimming pool area. The ditch was filled by a greyish brown slightly sandy loam with common large pebbles. It was of a round U-shaped profile, 1.5 to 2.0 m wide at the top and 70m deep below level of the surface of the subsoil.
