Description
Observations and recording of the excavation by hand of four stanchion pits for a new roof to the workshop. The pits were situated along the front of the building. Natural chalk was exposed in Trenches 2-4 at a depth of between 0.25m and 0.34m below modern ground level. Immediately overlying natural chalk in Trenches 2-4 was a 0.15m thick layer of firm mid brown silty clay with sparse chalk flecks, interpreted as the remains of a soil layer. No finds or other dating evidence was recovered. Only modern deposits were encountered in Trench 1.
