Description

Topsoil and subsoil was removed by machine from an area of approximately 2ha under archaeological supervision. A typical depth of 0.4m of overburden was stripped to expose the archaeologically-relevant horizon, where there was a low density of archaeological deposits, predominantly ditches and gullies representing fields and trackways of later Roman date. The area of the footpath separating Field 3 and Field 4 contained the western parts of enclosures previously recorded along the eastern side of Field 3; some of these appear to have been incorporated into a later system. A marked difference in density of land divisions was seen in Field 4 when compared with Field 3 to the west. Field 4 shows a large field system with ditches on a predominantly NNE-SSW long axis, subdivided by linears to create small fields and paddocks. A small assemblage of pottery was recovered during this stage of the works, suggesting that the fields were for stock or arable fields, and the enclosures likely to be for stock.
