Description
Excavation by machine of two trenches to evaluate the archaeological impact of the proposed development of a former timber yard by the erection of three houses. The trenches were located as close as practicable to the sites of the proposed houses. Trench 1 measured 10m by 1.6m and Trench 2 was 5m by 1.6m. In Trench 1 topsoil up to 200mm deep lay over a former yard surface constructed of clunch and cinders. This sealed a further topsoil layer and subsoil with natural geology at 900mm. No features of archaeological origin were revealed. Trench 2 was positioned across a gradual south-facing slope. A single ditch thought likely to be of Romano-British date was recorded; it occupied most of the trench and was cut into natural clay. The filling of the ditch was a green reddish-brown firm silty clay with frequent gravels, and it contained a small quantity of late Iron Age/Romano-British pottery, comprising Black Burnished Ware, Samian and Roman coarsewares.
