Description

Machine excavation of three trenches, each measuring 3m by 1m. Evidence of medieval occupation was observed in all the trenches, and in one (Trench 1) an in situ wall and surfaces were revealed. An 18th/19th-century brick well was also seen in this trench. In Trench 2 a single cut feature was see, and a buried soil horizon containing pottery of late medieval and post-medieval date, below a post-medieval black soil. The deposits in this trench were sloping, suggesting that they were filling a large feature or depression possibly dating to the medieval period. A rubbish pit was revealed in Trench 3. The filling of this pit contained slag material and cattle horns in association with 13th/14th-century pottery. These waste materials suggest metal working and possible tanning in backlands associated with buildings fronting Trinity Street.
