Description

Evaluation in 2007 by Cotswold Archaeology for Simons Developments of a town-centre site proposed for development. The evaluation comprised three trenches in the north-western part of the development area. This revealed well-preserved Roman features including pits and ditches, a collapsed wall, a metalled surface, and levelling and/or consolidation layers, all sealed by at least 0.7m of 'dark earth' and/or cultivation deposits. The excavators concluded that Roman features are likely to survive at a depth of between 123m and 1.69m below existing ground surface in the part of the site examined.
