Description

Evaluation consisting of twenty five trenches measuring 30m by 2m targeted, where possible, on potential archaeological features identified during geophysical survey, but also positioned to test apparently blank areas and the projected route of a Roman road. A substantial penannular ring ditch, the probable remains of a prehistoric barrow, was found, and several substantial ditches. One ditch terminus had been deliberately backfilled with material which included a cremation burial; a single radiocarbon date from this was consistent with late Neolithic date. A complete early bronze age food vessel was discovered in a pit cut into an earlier ditch. Trenches along the Roman round found no agger material or roadside ditches, and revealed a largely natural ridge cut by prehistoric features.
