Description
Observation and recording during excavation of ten engineering trial pits. The pits were excavated using a 0.60m wide toothed bucket and ceased when clear natural ground was observed - depths ranging from 1.8m to 3.3m. Detailed recording of some pits was not possible due to ground conditions. No pre-modern features were observed. Footings for 19th and 20th-century houses demolised in the 1960s were seen in Pit 2 and Pit 5. No evidence was seen of a well dug on the site in 1828, or of bomb damage. Excavations were not deep enough from the top of the site to reach any of the subterranean caverns or tunnels reputed to exist beneath the cliff.
