Description

A cross-shaped trench dug within the footprint of the proposed barn confirmed the presence of Roman features on the site. At a depth of 0.8m below the ground surface a substantial ditch was uncovered; pottery, glass and metalwork contained within the filling of this ditch dated it to the mid-1st century AD/early conquest period. A small stakehole associated with a possible gully were also recorded and thought likely to be Roman, though no dating evidence was found. It was not clear if the features revealed were military in character or associated with Vicus activity around the outskirts of the fort, but the work did confirm the presence of archaeology outside the known boundary of the fort, confirming the results of previous geophysical work undertaken in the 1970s and 1980s.
