Description
Observation and recording of a mechanically-excavated trench approximately 0.15m wide and 0.2-0.3m deep cut on an irregular east-west line from the new visitor centre to a point south east of the lagoon. In the course of work, at some points, the presence of live utilities etc necessitated the re-routing of the trench away from the approved route (SMC ). The trench was dug using a mechanical rotary trenching tool drawn by a small tractor, and inspected afterwards by an archaeologist. No archaeologically-significant features were identified. A small quantity of Iron Age/Roman pottery was recovered from the Long Field, the focus of activity in that period. The shallow depth of the trench was almost entirely within topsoil.
