Description

Archaeological observations and recording during replacement of a water main from Little Kington Cottage (NGR SU 7733 2300), along the road down Chapel Hill to a point in South Street (NGR SU 7630 2275), a length of approximately 1.1 km. Before commencement of the works a visual inspection of the route was carried out. Observations were maintained over six working days between 7 and 25 July. A 15-20m wide easement was stripped using a toothless bucket. Topsoil stripping was monitored closely, and the resulting spoil examined for artefacts. The pipe trench was excavated using a 0.50m toothed bucket, and the depth of excavation varied from one to two metres. Site code: W3701. Monitoring evealed no archaeological features or finds.
