Description
Areas G17 and G17B form a detailed gradiometer survey area, part of the larger geophysical survey undertaken along the route of a new water supply main between the Wessex Water works at Corfe Mullen, Dorset to Camp Hill Storage Tank near Salisbury, Wiltshire.
Probable archaeology was found in area G17 including a series of positive linear anomalies appearing to form a rough rectilinear feature (Anomalies 247-253), several discrete responses in close proximity to the rectilinear anomaly are possibly associated with in-filled pits (Anomaly 254), two parallel positive linear anomalies indicative of former cut features (Anomaly 255), a positive circular anomaly in the north of the area classified as of probable archaeological origin possibly associated with a roundhouse feature (Anomaly 256), and a further curvilinear anomaly (Anomaly 257).
Possible archaeology was found in both areas G17 and G17B. Several positive linear anomalies identified across both G17 & G17B are probably associated with former cut features such as ditches of possible archaeological origin (Anomalies 258-264), two negative linear responses are seen in the north of G17 indicative of a former banked feature (Anomalies 265-266), a number of discrete positive anomalies scattered across the area are probably associated with former cut features such as pits (Anomaly 267), positive and negative linear responses in the south of area G17 may be associated with a ridge and furrow headland or agricultural activity (Anomalies 268-269) and several magnetic spikes predominantly in the eastern half of area G17B are probably associated with ferrous debris (Anomaly 270).
The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
