Description

Areas G14, G14B and Pimperne Pumping Station form a detailed gradiometer survey area immediately west of Pimperne, which is part of the larger geophysical survey undertaken along the route of a new water supply main between the Wessex Water works at Corfe Mullen, Dorset to Camp Hill Storage Tank near Salisbury, Wiltshire. Probable archaeology in this area includes a large curvilinear anomaly indicative of a former cut feature (Anomaly 192), a circular arrangement of probable pits (Anomaly 193), a positive linear response indicative of a former ditch (Anomaly 194) and a weak linear response and several discrete responses indicative of former cut features of probable archaeological origin (Anomaly 195). Possible archaeology includes several positive linear responses indicative of infilled ditches (Anomalies 196-208), a series of parallel weak linear responses adjacent to Anomaly 192 (Anomaly 209), two large positive area anomalies indicative of large cut features (Anomaly 210), several negative linear responses indicative of a former banked feature (Anomaly 211), a scattering of discrete anomalies indicative of former pits or natural origin (Anomaly 212), and magnetic spikes scattered across much of the area probably associated with ferrous debris (Anomaly 213). The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
