Description
Area G10 and G10B is a detailed gradiometer survey area on Spread Eagle Hill, Melbury Abbas, which forms part of the larger geophysical survey undertaken along the route of a new water supply main between the Wessex Water works at Corfe Mullen, Dorset to Camp Hill Storage Tank near Salisbury, Wiltshire.
The survey area includes a scheduled round barrow, a square enclosure and a former chalk quarry. There was a strong increase in magnetic variation associated with the barrow and enclosure (Anomalies 168-169). Possible archaeology includes two weak linear responses close to the square enclosure (Anomalies 170-171) and may be associated with former cut features of possible archaeological origin, a series of discrete positive anomalies indicative of former pits scattered across the site (Anomaly 172) and a number of magnetic spikes scattered across much of the area and probably associated with ferrous debris.
The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
