Description

Archaeological observations and recording during the digging of post holes for erection of a new interpretation panel in the grounds of Fiddleford Manor. The new interpretation panel was situated adjacent to the gravel path approach to Fiddleford Manor, adjacent to the Scheduled Monument (SM22971). The two post holes were dug by hand by the sign contractor and spoil deposited immediately next to the pit. The holes were 0.2m in diameter, 0.62m deep and 0.36m apart (centre to centre). Dark yellowish brown clay natural was encountered at a depth of 0.60m below current ground surface. Above this was a layer of dark greyish brown humic silty clay soil containing occasional charcoal flecks, and brick and mortar flecks near the top. In the western post hole this lay beneath 0.33m of gravel, undoubtedly associated with the construction of the current gravel path. No finds were recovered.
