Description
A hoard of ten palstaves were discovered during fencing works associated with the construction of the new Bournemouth Hospital in 1985. In April 1987, Poole Museum excavated an irregular area of about ten square metres about six metres from the findspot. No archaeological features or finds were found. In February 1988, a two metre square centred on the findspot was excavated. No archaeological features were found, but green staining indicated the original location of the hoard. It was assumed that the pit or hole in which the hoard was buried had been destroyed when the fence post was inserted at the time of the original discovery. Though a relatively limited area was excavated, the results suggested that the hoard was not buried within an area of occupation. (1) (2) (3)
