Description
An evaluation of a site proposed for the construction of a learning resource centre, situated between Kingston Maurward House and Kingston Maurward Manor House. The evaluation of this area of approximately 2000m2 consisted of four trial trenches measuring 1.6m wide and between 4m and 16m in length. The trenches were excavated by machine under archaeological supervision, to the top of archaeological deposits or a depth of 1.2m. Archaeological features were cleaned and investigated by hand. The area proved to have been much disturbed by modern activity. A small number of finds of material such as brick, ceramic field drain, fragments of china of post-medieval or modern date were found, but not retained as part of the archive.
The northern part of the site appears to have been disturbed by construction of the sewage works, demolished in 1990-91. Elsewhere the site was disturbed by modern services and drains, and landscaping to accommodate past temporary buildings. The archaeologists on site concluded that there was very little potential for the survival of below-ground archaeological remains of medieval or earlier date.
