Description
An archaeological evaluation for a proposed extension to Manor Farm Quarry, Quarry Lane, Melbury Abbas, Dorset (St 8591 2031), was carried out by AC archaeology during september 2006. The evaluation comprised nine trenches totalling 260m in length, each terench 2.4m wide and representing a 2% sample of the proposed application area. The position and location of the site is considered to be in an area of high archaoelogical potential. The evaluation has demonstrated this with the presence of prehistoric activity revealed in three of the trenches, come of which represents Late Bronze Age funerary activity in the form of at least one cremation pit. A further two large features may represent either storage or post-pits.
