Description

Niall Oakey Heritage Consultant carried out an archaeological evaluation over the proposed extension to Mohun House. This comprised of a single hand excavated evaluation trench, which measured 1m by 2m. The evaluation confirmed the presence of a linear earthwork which ran north/south, but no datable material was recovered from it. Several artefacts were recovered during the excavation from two contexts. This consisted of mostly pottery of the coarse red wares variety. 185 sherds were recovered from these two contexts. Apart from one piece of medieval ceramic building material in the form of a crested ridge tile, the entire assemblage was of post-medieval date. The remaining artefacts comprised of post-medieval finds, and included clay pipes, window glass, vessel glass and metal objects.
