Description

A watching brief was set up in order to appropriately install a new gate along the fence line adjacent to the Five Marys Barrow Cemetery. The new gate was positioned a near as possible to the corner of the field. The digging of the postholes for the gate was done under archaeological supervision. Each had its topsoil removed, the surface below this was cleaned and examined, and then removed in turn. After this, the underlying natural solid chalk bedrock was excavated to the required depth. The gate was hung on 7inch square poles, set into these postholes. No artefacts or indicators of archaeological features were detected. (no exact date given for duration of works).
