Description
Keith Faxon carried out a phase of archaeological monitoring during the preparation of land at Manor Farm House. This was prior to the building of a detached house.
Ground reduction took place over an area of 20m by 19.5m and to a depth of 2m below the existing ground surface. A CASE CX135 excavator with a toothed bucket was used for this. This was presaged by the removal of vegetation, small trees and up to 0.3m of topsoil. The reductions on the site were monitored and recorded.
A ditch and a pit were recorded from the watching brief. The ditch, well defined and V-shaped, contained six 12th-13th century coarseware pottery sherds, and eleven animal bones. The pit contained the remains of a small mammal, and was interpreted as a modern pet burial.
