Description
A desk-based assessment, including a visit and walkover of the site on 9th December 2008, was undertaken by Terrain Archaeology on behalf of NT Building Design Limited in connection with a planning application to form two self contained flats on the first and second floors.
The study area for this assessment covered a 100m by 100m rectangular area. 18 Listed Buildings are present within the study area.
Research included searches of the National Monuments Record and the Dorset HER, a literature search, and examination of Ordnance Survey and historical maps.
An excavation in 1978 at 41 to 43 St Thomas Street to the east of the site found no evidence of medieval occupation was found. A Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age cremation urn was found in 1836 at 20 Petticoat Lane at the north end of the study area.
This site lies right in the core of the medieval town of Melcombe Regis, and close to the parish church. This puts it in a prime position to potentially contain undisturbed buried remains.
