Description

Excavation on the site of the demolition of or moving of existing buildings, and the erection of new agricultural buildings. Seven trenches comprising 2% of the area were excavated by machine. Four were situated south-east of Snag Lane; three of these were 30m by 1.9m and one 15, by 1.9m. Three more trenches were dug to the north-west, two 30m by 1.9m and one 28.6m by 1.9m. The area was shown to have suffered from severe erosion from ploughing. Finds recorded from topsoil or colluvial layers included a single piece of unidentified pottery, thought unlikely to be prehistoric, and 15 pieces of worked flint, consisting mainly of thick flakes of Bronze Age character. The only tool found was a scraper from the topsoil. Two archaeological features were encountered in the southern part of the site. A very shallow ditch, probably the truncated remains of an old field boundary, was recorded in Trench 6 and a shallow irregular linear feature, interpreted as an old hedge line, in Trench 7; neither feature could be dated but both are thought to be post-medieval.
