Description

An archaeological evaluation prior to submission of a planning application for residential development. The evaluation comprised the excavation of six trial trenches concentrated within the area of the proposed buildings. The trenches were excavated by machine to the top of natural chalk bedrock, exposing a number of archaeological features, all post-medieval in date. No evidence for prehistoric activity was recorded. The excavators felt that the shallow nature of archaeological features on the site indicated that it had been levelled at some time before Loud's Piece was built; they noted that there was still potential for survival of deep features, albeit truncated, on the site.
