Description
Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation on a development located along the southern edge of Sandford. This was to appraise the archaeological potential of the site, by investigating the nature, extent and preservation of archaeological deposits. Two trenches were dug, both measuring 20m long by 1.5m wide, either side of Camp Cottage. These trenches were machine excavated down to the top of any in situ deposits, or the natural subsoil, using a toothless grading bucket.
In trench 1 there is what appears to be a Roman road in the form of a 13m wide, 0.13m thick layer of compact pale-grey sand and gravel. It is similar in composition to a section taken from the Roman road at Cogdean, 9km to the northeast. A Medieval V-shaped ditch was also found in Trench 1, which was generally regularly sided and aligned northeast to southwest.
There were no finds recovered from either of the trenches excavated.
