Description
Evaluation (NTSMR 110580) by Terrain Archaeology in advance of car park improvement works. Visible building remains consisted of a base of concrete and concrete blocks. Two 1m square trenches were excavated, revealing that the concrete blocks were set on a poured concrete footing and the interior levelled with rubble and gravel. A concrete drain sump was found adjacent to the concrete base. To the east another concrete base edged in red brick was noted. Historic maps and photographs confirm that these structures date to World War 2 and that the concrete base was for a wooden army hut with adjacent toilet hut, probably for the use of the searchlight detachment operating searchlights on Bind Barrow and on the beach.
