Description

A single trial trench measuring 5m by 3m was excavated at the southern end of a large development site occupying nearly all the area between . The trench was 2.5 m from East Street and 8.2 m from the River Allen. A quantity of horn cores and leg bones of cattle were uncovered. The results bore out documentary research which indicated that there had been little development in this area of the town, apart from the mill and mill race at the northern end, and in the immediate vicinity of East Street, adjacent to East Bridge. No evidence of quays was found, and the land appears to have been built up in the post-medieval period. A tanner had premises in the area in the late eighteenth century, and the tithe map (1847) shows a carriage works adjacent to East Bridge.
