Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation of land adjacent to Brecon House between the 5th and 8th September 1997 in advance of proposed residential development. The work comprised the hand excavation of four 1m2 test pits. A deep sequence of 1.2m of soil deposits was recorded in two pits. The other two contained even deeper soil accumulations and were not bottomed. The upper layers, containing medieval and post-medieval pottery, were considered to represent imported material for post-medieval terracing. The basal deposits contained exclusively 13th-15th century pottery and are considered to represent in situ medieval soil horizons. A single sherd of Romano-British pottery from the base is not significant.
