Description

A small vault was discovered beneath the building during conversion. The developer contacted the Dorset County Council Archaeology Service, and a site visit was made. The vault lay beneath a cross-wall of the present building. It was 1.2m long (north-south), 0.9m wide, and 1.6m deep, with walls of coursed rubble; one stone that could be examined was found to be greensand. There was no brick in the rubble, suggessting that the structure pre-dates the widespread use of brick in Shaftesbury.
