Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out by AC archaeology for the Property Management Division, Dorset County Council, in advance of submission of a planning application for the construction of new school accommodation. Three trenches were excavated by machine on the school playing field and terraced lawns east of Barton Hill House. A considerable density of features of medieval date was revealed and medieval soil horizons found in all three trenches. The lower terrace showed evidence of quarrying, the middle terrace possible structural remains, and the upper terrace a series of pits, postholes and a palisade, all of uncertain function. Pottery finds included material of Romano-British and Saxon date.
