Description

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of two new residential blocks for Milton Abbey School, adjacent to the Headmaster's House. The area lies on the edge of the area of the former town of Middleton, within the area of the Scheduled Monument. A single trench was excavated to the south of the house. A borehole transect was also drilled across this area (4 cores). Three transects (8 cores) were drilled to the north of the house. A single ditch, thought to be modern was found in the trench to the south of the house. The borehole transects revealed natural chalk underlying modern topsoil. No earlier soils or features were encountered.
