Description

An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation and recording of four machine-dug trenches, was undertaken by AC Archaeology in advance of the proposed construction of new school buildings at Milldown School, Blandford. The trenches were located to examine several possible archaeological features, detected as magnetic anomalies by geophysical survey. A curvilinear anomaly was confirmed by trenching to be an arc of a ditch which may represent a ring ditch (ploughed-out barrow). The fill of the ditch contained a small quantity of worked flint flakes. The other magnetic anomalies thought to be archaeological in origin were shown by excavation to be either geological or of modern date.
